What is the Purpose of Dual Factor?
The purpose is to add an additional layer of security to the authentication process. Instead of only entering a password to log in, you’ll also enter a code or use a security key. This additional step helps make sure that you, and only you, can access your account.
How to Configure Dual Factor for Popular Social Media Apps
Facebook (Mobile)
1. Open the App
2. Select the menu icon in the lower right-hand corner
3. Scroll down to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Accounts Center > Password and Security> Two-Factor Authentication > Chose Text Message (SMS)
Facebook (Desktop)
1. Login to Facebook.
2. Select your profile icon in the top right-hand corner> Settings & privacy> Settings
3. In the left-hand menu, click “Accounts Center"> Password & security> Two-Factor Authentication> Choose your Facebook account> Select and set up your preferred method> Verify your method and complete the setup> Save your backup codes (in case you lose access to your 2FA device).
Instagram (Mobile)
1. Open the App
2. Select the person icon in the lower right-hand corner then the menu icon in the upper-right
3. Select Settings and Privacy> Accounts Center> Password and security > Two-Factor Authentication> Choose your Instagram account> Tap Authentication method> Follow the setup instructions> After verification, 2FA is enabled
Note: Save your backup codes securely (in case you lose your phone).
Instagram (Desktop)
1. Go to your profile and tap .
2. Tap Settings.
3. Accounts Center> Click Password and security> Click Two-factor authentication> Select your Instagram account> Choose your method> Follow the prompts to verify and activate> Save your backup codes for recovery.

LinkedIn (Mobile)
1. Open the App
2. Select your profile icon in the upper left-hand corner
3. Select the Settings icon at the bottom of the screen> Sign in & security
4. Click Two-step verification> Click Set up button> Enter code sent to your email> Submit
5. Enter the 6-digit code sent to your email in the > Submit (2FA is now Active)
Note: You will be given backup/recovery codes—store them safely (offline).
LinkedIn (Desktop)
1. Login to LinkedIn
2. Select the down arrow right below your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner and select “Settings & Privacy” under the Account section of the drop down
3. In the left sidebar, click Sign in & security> Scroll to Two-step verification and click Change> Click Turn on
4. Choose either: Authentication app (TOTP app or Google Authenticator)> SMS verification> Complete the setup
5. For app: scan the QR code or copy the setup key into your app, then enter the code shown. (For SMS: enter your mobile number and verify using the code)
6. Once verified, 2FA is active
Note: Save your backup codes securely.
Snapchat (Mobile)
1. Open the Snapchat app and log in> Tap your Bitmoji or profile icon in the top left.
2. Tap ⚙️ in My Profile to open Settings
3. Tap 'Two-Factor Authentication'
4. Tap ‘Continue’ to finish setting it up!
5. Choose SMS Text or an Authenticator App> Follow the prompts (For app: You’ll be shown a setup key or QR code to enter into your authenticator app and For SMS: Snapchat will send you a text with a code to verify)
6. Once verified, 2FA will be turned on
Note: Also recommend making a recovery code
- Tap ‘Recovery Code’
- Tap ‘Generate Code’
- Enter your password to verify that it’s you!
- Save your code and keep it safe and accessible.
WhatsApp (Android Mobile)
1. Open the WhatsApp app on your phone.
2. Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner.
3. Tap Settings
4. Tap Account.
5. Tap Two-step verification.
6. Tap Enable.
7. Enter your custom PIN.
8. Re-enter your custom PIN.
9. Tap Next.
10. Enter your email address.
11. Re-enter your email address.
12. Tap Save.
13. Tap Done.
WhatsApp (iPhone Mobile)
1. Open the WhatsApp app on your phone.
2. Tap ”Settings” in the bottom corner.
3. Tap Account.
4. Tap Two-step verification.
5. Tap Enable.
6. Enter your custom PIN.
7. Re-enter your custom PIN.
8. Tap Next.
9. Enter your email address.
10. Re-enter your email address.
11. Tap Save.
12. Tap Done.

1. Log in to your account> Left side, click More> Settings and Privacy> Settings and Support> Settings and privacy
2. Click on Security and account access> click Security.
3. Tap Two-factor authentication.
4. There are three methods to choose from: Text message, Authentication app, or Security key.
5. Follow the instructions for your chosen method:
For authenticator app: Scan the QR code with your app and enter the 6-digit code.
For SMS: Enter your phone number, then verify the code received via text.
For security key: Insert the hardware key and follow prompts.
6. Confirm and 2FA will be enabled
Note: Save backup codes shown—these help you log in if you lose access to your 2FA method.
To sign up via text message (Note: As of March 2023, SMS-based 2FA is only available to Twitter Blue subscribers):
1. Click the checkbox next to Text message.
2. Read the overview instructions, then click Next.
3. Enter your password, then click Verify. Note: If you don’t already have a phone number associated with your account, we’ll prompt you to enter it. Additionally, you can choose to deselect the option to allow your existing contacts to find you on Twitter.
4. Now we’ll ask you to enter the confirmation code we sent you via text message. Type in the code, you’ll see a confirmation screen with a backup code. We recommend you store a screenshot of the code in case you need it for future use. This will help you access your account if you lose your mobile phone or change your phone number.
5. Click Got it when you’re finished with this screen.
Now, when you log in to your account on Twitter.com, Twitter for iOS, Twitter for Android, or mobile.twitter.com, a six-digit code will be text messaged to your phone to use during login.
