Recommendations for Creating a More Secure Amazon Alexa and Google Home Device
Unless you mute your Amazon Alexa or Google Home devices, they are always listening to you and capturing what they hear. This is done so the device (i.e. Amazon & Google) can better service you. This information also gets stored with your respective Amazon Alexa and Google accounts and some information may even be shared back with Amazon and/or Google. However, you have control of this information and you can delete these recordings at anytime by following the steps outlined here.
Amazon Alexa
1. Find Your Voice Recordings: Using the Amazon Alexa app, navigate to Settings > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data > Manage Your Voice Recordings. Here, you’ll be able to view a list of your recordings history. You can also use the drop-down to select a date range for your recordings.
2. Delete Recordings:
Once on the Voice Recordings screen you can take action on your recordings. You can:
➔ Delete individual recordings – Use the date range feature, and then Select the voice recordings you want to delete or delete all voice recordings for that date range.
➔ Delete all items at once - Select All History > Delete.
Google Home:
1. Find Your Recordings: Navigate to the Google Activity web page by logging into your Google Account > select “Data & personalization” in the left-hand column > select “Manage your activity controls” > select “Web & App Activity”> then Manage Activity. On this page, you can view a list of your past activity. Items with an audio icon include a recording.
2. Delete Recordings: Once on the Manage Activity screen you can take action on your recordings. You can:
➔ Delete individual recordings - Next to the item you want to delete, select More > Delete.
➔ Delete all items at once (Important: These steps will delete all of your Web & App Activity items, not just items that include a recording.) - On the top right, select More > Delete activity by > Select All time and follow the instructions to delete your activity.
➔ Delete your audio recordings automatically (Important: These steps turn on the auto-delete option for all of your Web & App Activity items, not just items that include an audio recording.) - On the top right, select More > Keep activity for. Click the button for how long you want to keep your activity > then Next > then Confirm.
