Instagram Hardening Guide

Click your profile icon on the bottom right hand corner of the app

Click here

After you click on the lines on your profile page, click Accounts Center

Click personal details

Here you can edit your contact information and add your birthday

Go back to the Settings and Activity page

Click Accounts Center

Click password and security

Click change password

Select the account you want to update

Enter your current and new password. Re-type your new password and click change password. Ensure the blue box is checked, especially if your account was used by another person.

Go back to the Settings and Activity page

Click on Accounts Center

Click Password and security

Click Two-factor authentication

Select the account you want to enable two-factor authentication

Choose the method to enable two-factor authentication. BlackCloak recommends using an authentication app

Download an authentication app and either scan the QR code or enter in the key. Once you do, click next

Enter the six digit code from your authentication app and click next to finish

Go back to the Settings and Activity page

Click Accounts Center

Click Password and security

Under Security checks, click where you're logged in

Click on your Instagram account

Here, you can see every device and location where you logged in. If you don't recognize a login, click on it. If you want to log out of that device, click Log out

If you want to log out of multiple devices at once, scroll down and click Select devices to log out

Click on all of the devices you want to sign out of and click Log out

In the Accounts Center, click Password and security and click Security Checkup

On this page, you can change your password and enable two-factor authentication as well. You can also verify your email and phone number. First, click Email

Check to see that the email address attached to your account is correct. If it is, click Next

A six-digit code will be sent to your email address. After you receive it, enter it here and click Next

You will see that the process has been completed

Now, let's verify a mobile number

Again, verify that the number attached to the account is correct, then click Next

Enter the code sent to your phone. Click Next to complete the process

Go back to the Settings and Activity page

Scroll down and click account privacy

Click this button to make your account private. The only people who can see your profile are those who you personally approve

Go back to the Settings and activity page

Click tags and mentions

Here, you can choose who can tag you in photos and videos

On the same page, you can choose who can mention you in pieces of content

In your phone's settings, search for Instagram. Then click location

On this screen, you can choose when Instagram uses your location

Go back to the Settings and Activity page

Click on Accounts Center

Click ad preferences

Under Ad topics, click See all

Here, you can search for ad topics you want to see fewer adds for. Click View and manage topics

Click on a topic

If you want to see fewer targeted ads on a particular topic, click See less. Then, close the box for it to go into effect. Note: It may take 24 hours for the change to go into effect

On the Ad preference page, click Manage info

Click Activity information from ad partners

Click Review Setting

Click this field if you don't want Instagram to use your activity information to send you targeted ads
