Disable Location Sharing on Photos - Apple iPhone, Mac Computers

Sharing your location can present physical security risks depending on who accesses the photos in question. The best practice action for your privacy and security is to disable location collection, storage, and sharing from your photos and albums.

To assess which photos have collected your location, on iPhone/iPad:

  1. Go to the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Tap a photo or video with metadata you want to see, then swipe up or tap .

    • View photos from a specific time: Make sure the Library tab is selected in the bottom-left corner. Swipe down to browse photos, then tap Years or Months to go to a specific time in your library.

    • View photos by location: Tap Collections, then tap the Map collection below Pinned. Only pictures and videos that have embedded location information (GPS data) are included.

To assess which photos have collected your location, on Mac:

You can use the Places album in Photos to easily review the photos in your library that have location metadata embedded.

  1. In the Photos app on your Mac, select the photos you want to review.

Location metadata in photos and videos can be collected only if your Camera app has access to Location Services.

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, then tap Never. You can share photos with others without sharing the location where the photos were taken.

You can share photos with others without sharing the location where the photos were taken.

  1. Do any of the following:

    • Open the Camera app , select the camera roll, then select one or more photos you want to share.

    • Open the Photos app , then select one or more photos you want to share.

  2. Tap , then tap Options.

  3. Turn off Location, then tap .

  4. Share the photos using one of the methods shown in the Share Sheet.

Remove existing location metadata collected in photos on iPhone and iPad

Location metadata in photos and videos can be collected only if your Camera app has access to Location Services.

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, then tap Never.

To remove location metadata associated with photos:

  1. In the Photos app on your Mac, select the photos you want to change.

  2. Choose Image > Location, then choose Hide Location or Revert to Original Location.
