A Warning to Gmail Users: New Phishing Scam Surfaces

Threat actors have launched a new phishing scam targeting Gmail users. If you or a loved one uses a Gmail account, please read this alert to stay informed and ensure you're equipped to spot these scams.

How The Scam Works

The scam involves phone calls, emails and malicious websites to reach its target. Gmail users typically receive a phone call from someone posing as Google support, warning them that someone has tried to hack their Google account. The threat actor tells the user that a password reset is required to remedy the nonexistent problem.

Next, the threat actor sends a malicious password reset email to the Gmail account that includes a fraudulent security verification code. The threat actor will ask the user to read the verification code out loud, which they use to take over the account.

How Can I Protect Myself?

It's important to remember that no legitimate organization will ever contact you unsolicited to request personal information in order to remedy a problem.

If you receive a phone call or an email asking you for personal information to fix an issue, hang up or delete the message without responding. Do not click on any links or download any attachments. Here are some other tips to make sure you stay safe from threat actors:

  • Do not answer any phone calls or emails from senders you do not recognize.

  • Secure your Gmail account by creating a passkey. If you need any help setting up a passkey, please contact the BlackCloak Concierge team.

  • Follow Google's guidance on what constitutes a legitimate security alert sent by the company.

  • If you receive any suspicious communications, contact the BlackCloak Concierge team and our team will investigate the legitimacy of the message.
