Critical Chrome Vulnerability - Action Required

Edited

Google has released an emergency security patch for the Chrome web browser, addressing a critical vulnerability. Immediate action is recommended.

Chrome downloads security updates in the background, but it will not install them until the application is completely closed and reopened. If you have kept your browser open for several days or weeks (often done to save many tabs) you are still likely running the vulnerable version.

Action Steps Required

Please do this at your earliest convenience on every computer where you use Google Chrome. Your open tabs will automatically reload when you restart the browser.

1. Save Your Work

  • Save relevant work in any open tab.

2. Fully Quit Chrome

  • Shut down the application completely by right-clicking on the icon and selecting QUIT

  • Windows users: Right-click the Chrome icon on your taskbar and select "Close window" for every instance of Chrome running.

  • Mac users: Go to the top menu bar, click the "Chrome" menu, and select "Quit Google Chrome."

3. Relaunch Chrome

  • Open the Chrome app again. The security patch will install right as it starts up, protecting your device. No additional action is needed to keep yourself safe from this vulnerability.
