December #1 - BlackCloak Cyber Alert: Update Your iPhone to Avoid FaceTime Scams

Edited

Apple released a new iOS update (26.2) on Friday that addresses several security issues affecting iPhone users. Most notably, this update helps prevent certain FaceTime-related scams and other risks that could expose personal information. We recommend installing this update as soon as possible.

What this update helps protect against:

  • Scams where attackers make a FaceTime call appear to come from someone you know

  • Attempts to trick users into sharing sensitive information like credit card details

  • Exposure of passwords while screen sharing on FaceTime

  • Broader security issues affecting Safari and other web browsers on iPhones

    How to install the update:

To check for and install the update:

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to trusted Wi-Fi and plug the device into power to prepare for the update.

  2. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update

  1. The iPhone/iPad will automatically scan for the update. If it is available (as shown below), select the option to update.

Chrome Vulnerability: Action Required

Google has released another emergency security patch for the Chrome web browser. Immediate action is recommended.

Chrome downloads security updates in the background, but it will not install them until the application is completely closed and reopened. If you have kept your browser open for several days or weeks (often done to save many tabs) you are still likely running the vulnerable version.

How to install the update:

Please do this at your earliest convenience on every computer where you use Google Chrome. Your open tabs will automatically reload when you restart the browser.

1. Save Your Work

  • Save relevant work in any open tab.

2. Fully Quit Chrome

  • Shut down the application completely by right-clicking on the icon and selecting QUIT

  • Windows users: Right-click the Chrome icon on your taskbar and select "Close window" for every instance of Chrome running.

  • Mac users: Go to the top menu bar, click the "Chrome" menu, and select "Quit Google Chrome."

3. Relaunch Chrome

  • Open the Chrome app again. The security patch will install right as it starts up, protecting your device. No additional action is needed to keep yourself safe from this vulnerability.
